Treating Restless Leg Syndrome with Chiropractic Care

Restless LegHave you ever experienced annoying sensations in your legs that prevent you from sleeping, most often causing a tickling, or crawling sensation in the legs that makes you restless and triggers the need to walk around? This is called Restless Leg syndrome, which has also been renamed as Willis-Ekbom Disease. Its symptoms vary from one person to another. It’s a neurological condition, which according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes, affects 5 million adults in the US. Let’s find out how chiropractic care can help treat this condition:

Symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome

Common symptoms of Restless Leg syndrome include sensations of burning, aching, gnawing or cramping from the knee below and in most cases, it can also be painful. People who suffer from it severely cannot take a blanket over their legs at night. Most commonly, the symptoms occur when a person is relaxing or has been sitting for a long while. Moving or walking diminishes the symptoms but they often get more severe at night or in the evening. The severity and duration of pain becomes stronger as a person ages. It is also important to note that Restless Leg Syndrome is not the same as leg cramps. Leg cramps include a knotting of the muscles, while this condition also includes local muscle pain which can get severe.

Seeking Chiropractic Care

As this condition is caused by a dysfunction of the nervous system, chiropractic care can help in correcting the problem. Nerves that don’t function well also prevent normal functioning of the areas they lead to and many nerves exiting from the lower spine control leg muscles. A chiropractor can help relieve irritation in these nerves, relax muscles and ensure proper nerve flow treating the restless leg syndrome effectively.

I have had Restless Legs Syndrome for 57 years and have just started with a Chiropractor. I am praying that it will help as I have also developed arthritis in the knees and shoulders so pain is everywhere for me and it is driving me crazy as I sleep so little. It does get worse as you get older, it is a very cruel disease.
